Abstract:

This study aimed to evaluate antimicrobial antioxidant activity of eleven plant species from southern governorates of Jordan. Methanol and ethanol extracts of the plant species were screened for its total phenolic, in-vitro antioxidant and, antimicrobial activities against pathogenic bacteria. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extracts was determined by disc diffusion method. The overall antioxidant activity of S. spinosum, A. fragrantissima and A. seiberi was strongest. The tested plant extracts presented a remarkable total antioxidant capacity equivalent to vitamin E. The same extracts were shown to have the highest phenolic values. The total phenol content of methanol extract for 11 plant species varied from 194.9 mg GA/g  extract in S. spinosum to 8.5 mg GA/g  extract in A. fragrantissima but in ethanol extract the total phenols varied from 252.4 mg GAE/g extract in S. spinosum to 12.1 mg GAE/g  extract in A. fragrantissima. All of the extracts showed activity against pathogenic/toxigenic bacteria strains Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes,  Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter jejuni, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus cereus. The present study reveals that the selected plants would exert several beneficial effects by virtue of their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
