Effects of modified atmosphere packaging on quality of cut Dendrobium orchid

Abstract:

In this paper the effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) treatment using either polyethylene film (PE), low density polyethylene film (LDPE), high density polyethylene film (HDPE), polyvinyl chloride film (PVC) and polypropylene film (PP) on the quality and storability of cut Dendrobium orchids were investigated. Orchid flowers were packed in a cardboard box, which was then wrapped with each of the different MAP film types under consideration and completely sealed prior to being stored at 13°C with 95% relative humidity (RH). The results indicated that the Dendrobium orchids packed inside polypropylene (PP) film had the longest storage life of 18 days, whereas the control ordinary batch conventional packing lasted the shortest of merely 9 days. Moreover, all MAP’s were found to lower weight loss, respiration rates, ethylene production and anthocyanin content of orchid flowers.
