Phytochemicals, nutritional properties and anti-oxidant activity in young shoots of Melocanna baccifera, a traditional vegetable of Northeast India

Abstract:

Melocanna baccifera is a unique bamboo naturally distributed in hilly area of northeast India, belonging to the grass family of Poaceae. In Northeast India young bamboo shoots are used as a vegetable due to the presence of high nutritional value. The aim of this study was to determine secondary metabolites, proximate composition, minerals, heavy metals, and anti-oxidant activity of Melocanna baccifera shoots. Titrimetric method was applied for determination of alkaloid and tannin contents. Phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined by the colorimetric method. Standard AOAC methods were used for determination of proximate composition and atomic absorption spectrophotometer was used for trace element analysis.  Evaluation of anti-oxidant activity of young shoots was done by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) radical scavenging assay. Young shoots of Melocanna baccifera contained good amount of secondary metabolites. The energy level of young shoots of Melocanna baccifera was 204 kcal/100 g of dry powder. Iron, sodium, potassium, and calcium were found to be present. Young shoot extract of Melocanna baccifera showed significant scavenging activity as compared to standard ascorbic acid. Present study inferred that young shoots of Melocanna baccifera would serve as a good source of dietary supplement for human consumption
