Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to assess the safety culture within the research university in Malaysia such as Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The eight elements of safety culture in education sector have been identified including rules and procedures, safety policy, training, management commitment, communication, reward systems, leadership and involvement. The method in this study was using questionnaires. A total of 298 respondents were randomly selected as a sample of study which represents the students from the Faculty of Science in each of research universities. The collected data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.0. The data were summarized using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that the students’ rules and procedure, safety policy, training, leadership and management commitment are the priority elements of safety culture to be stressed out of the effort of improvement which showed average values lower than 2.33. Therefore, a baseline toward establishing a positive safety culture and support improvement by all research universities should be considered as a management tool to guide organizations’ safety culture.
