Abstract:

The monthly datasets of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived from the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), was studied using Morlett Wavelet Analysis over India for the period 1982 to 2000. The interannual variability and the seasonal periodicities have been studied from the wavelet spectra. The paper also focuses on the estimation of Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) for khariff (June to September) and rabi (October to December) seasons using NDVI time series in order to examine the vegetation growth over the study period. The results of the study show that i) NDVI has the strong periodicity of 8th to16th month or 4th to 8th year periodicity and ii) the time series of VCI has the impact of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal which is evidenced by the poor VCI values during the El Niño years 1983 and 1987.
