Screening of the antioxidant and the free radical scavenging potential of Tunisian Citrullus colocynthis Schrad. from Mednine

Abstract:

The goal of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity of an endemic species from south Tunisia (Mednine), designated as Citrullus colocynthis Schrad. Aqueous and diluted acetone extracts from different parts have been investigated for their scavenging capacity on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and by analyzing their radical ABTS [2,2´-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] cation scavenging activity. All organ extracts showed a dose-depending antioxidant activity, but the results were different for each organ depending on the extract and the applied test. The observed results strongly support the use of Citrullus colocynthis Schrad. as an important source of natural antioxidant agents.
