Abstract:

Grafting in tomato crops was first used to avoid problems with soil pathogens. Later uses include developing resistance or tolerance to different abiotic stresses such as salinity, temperature and insufficient or excess water. Grafting should be studied under the soil and climate conditions where the procedure will be used. This research has been carried out on three commercial cultivars of “pear cherry” tomato cultivar Ministar (Sakata seed), cultivar Luciplús (Hazera seeds) and cultivar Santa (Sakata seed) grafted on four commercial rootstocks Beaufort, Maxifort, Multifort (De Ruiter seeds) and Spirit (Nunhens seed). We grew them in soil disinfected with metam sodium during two seasons in mesh greenhouses in Granada, Spain. Grafting increased yields of the Ministar cultivar; the size of the yield increases depends on the rootstock used. It had a neutral or negative effect on Luciplús yields, independent of the rootstock. There was no significant effect on yield in the Santa cultivar. The cultivar had greater effects on yield than did the rootstock.
