Abstract:

A five-year survey of the prevalence of bovine trypanosomiasis for the period January 2000 to December 2004 revealed that a total of 6,203 cattle of mixed Zebu (mostly white Fulani) and Muturu breeds were screened for bovine trypanosomiasis with an annual mean of 1,240 animals sampled. Laboratory examination of blood samples showed that a total of 405 animals representing 6.53% were infected with bovine trypanosomiasis with a mean infection rate of 81 representing 6.53%. In the year 2000, out of 860 animals examined, 72 representing 8.37% were infected. In the year 2001, of the 1,250 animals examined and sampled, 80 representing 6.40% were infected. In the year 2002, of the 1170 animals sampled, 56 representing 4.79% were infected while in 2003, of the 1,353 animals examined 103 representing 7.61% were infected. In the year 2004 out of 1,570 cattle sampled, 94 representing 5.99% were infected. Overall mean prevalence was 6.53%.
