Estimation of genetic parameters for potassium content in bread wheat(Triticum aestivum L.) under rainfed conditions

Abstract:

The estimation of the genetic components of drought resistance is a necessary requirement to ensure further progress in plant breeding for drought resistant crops. Potassium is an essential element for growth and development of plant, it is effective in total dry matter production. During drought period, potassium is prominent ion in compare with other ions and it is also an osmotic regulator. To estimate the genetic variance components and heritability for potassium content in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) the present investigation was conducted at research farm of Agricultural Faculty of Zanjan University in Iran with two bread wheat cultivars (Azar-2 and Sabalan) along with 50 F2:3 lines from their crossing in a randomized complete block design with three replications under rainfed conditions in 2006-2007. Potassium content of leaves was measured according to Kosh Kholgh Sima method. The results showed that potassium content in leaves has additive gene effects with high heritability. Therefore, for this trait relatively high genetic gain from selection can be expected and recommended for breeding of wheat populations to drought tolerance.
