Abstract:

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) is a system that identifies and manages significant hazards at key points in the water production process. In worldwide, the drinking water sector is increasingly aware of the limitation of end-product testing for ensuring safety. The main role of HACCP system is to understand the risk associated with the process and starts focusing process control away from end-product testing, thus the result is production of a product with higher quality. In the present work, the HACCP principles were applied to drinking water treatment plant (WTP) in Germi City, Iran. This paper outlines the approach taken to hazard identification, determination of critical control points (CCPs) and the integration of HACCP with water supply operation. The identified critical control points included raw water source (Gilarloo Dam), pre-chlorination, coagulation/flocculation/sedimentation, filtration and post-chlorination. It was found that by application of this system, the risks from water can be reduced to minimum values in drinking water of Germi City and the finished water would be regarded more safe and healthy.
