Control of sedimentation in reservoirs by optimal operation of reservoir releases

Abstract:

To evaluate the minimization of reservoir sedimentation, an optimal control methodology was developed. The sedimentation problem in reservoirs was simulated by GSTARS3, one of the newest versions of GSTARS series to simulate river and reservoir sedimentation. GSTARS3 was coupled with an optimization methodology to minimize the reservoir sedimentation. The minimization of reservoir sedimentation is a constrained and nonlinear optimization problem. This constrained problem was changed to an unconstrained problem using penalty function and then was solved using the Powell method, one of the direct search methods. Capabilities of this model were demonstrated through the Voshmgir Dam in Iran for 12 months period.
