Abstract:

Phytoremediation, a technique utilized to restore polluted sites, is cost-effective, environmentally friendly and technically applicable in situ so as to make it preferable to other chemical or mechanical techniques. In the present paper, we reviewed the actual trends in the use of transgenic poplar for phytoremediation of contaminated soils. We performed the studies using grey poplar (Populus tremula×Populus alba), wildtype plants and the plants that have the overexpressed gene (i.e. γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (gshI)) from E. coli in the cytosol. In this review, we focused on the main symptoms of cadmium toxicity both on the root and shoot apparatuses. In addition, we elucidated the mechanisms that plant activate to prevent absorption or to detoxify toxic metal ions, such as synthesis of phytochelatins and metallothioneins involved in stress response. Finally, we considered some possible plant-biotechnology applications that can be applied for phytoremediation.
