Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to record some observations made on issues faced in Malaysia in relation to the implementation of Facilities Management (FM), particularly in Building Maintenance (BM), with a special focus on the health and safety aspects of the building’s occupation, and also to outline several proposals to help overcome the problems. Research methodology includes a study of relevant literature and recent research to identify issues and best practices for FM in BM especially those impacting building occupation. This paper also concludes with some suggestions to the FM industry in Malaysia to improve BM towards achieving a healthy and safe condition in the building for its occupants. In addition, this paper also tried to highlight some issues and problems faced by FM in maintaining buildings, especially in the health and safety aspects of the buildings occupation. This would help FM to make sufficient preparation and precaution in BM activities. Finally, this study explained the FM industry in Malaysia from a BM perspective focusing on improving the health and safety aspects for occupants of the building.
