Abstract:

Flow and optimization analyses have been linked in an iterative procedure to develop a general model for optimal design of the hydropower systems. The governing equations for the analysis of water hammer in conduits are solved using a finite difference scheme. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm optimization technique is utilized to select the optimal design for the headrace tunnel, penstocks, and surge tanks. The benefit-cost ratio is considered as the objective function in the optimization analysis. The accuracy and fast convergence of the developed model was quite satisfactory.
