Abstract:

The current co-composting of empty fruit bunch and palm oil mill effluent from the mills needs a shorter processing time to reduce land usage. A study at industry scale composting involving three heaps of 30 tonnes empty fruit bunch each is reported. Two heaps were added with starter cultures with one heap given turning daily and the other alternate days. Results showed that co-composting of empty fruit bunch with palm oil mill effluent was accelerated by the starter cultures in term of faster reduction of C/N ratio from 35 to below 20 within three weeks instead of five weeks for control. The cultured heaps had their microbes enumeration reduced and were stable in the end of composting process. The turning frequency had affected the rate of temperature decrease but not the degradation rate. The starter culture can be used to reduce the time needed for composting of palm oil mills waste.
