Abstract:

The qanat (kariz) is one of the biggest groundwater resource in arid environments. The qanat with preservation of natural hydrogeologic condition of aquifers at full or low water periods acts as regulator of outflow of groundwater. Thereby qanats without pressure on aquifer condition do not have negative influence on the aquifer. This article investigates the compatibility of qanat with the three-dimensional environment through studying the properties of 16 qanats in two plains of different hydrogeologic conditions at Markazi province in Iran. Using statistical software, some influential variables including geometric properties and variations of water table and rainfall, were investigated and analyzed. Results show that, qanat discharge has the greatest correlation with the hydrodynamic properties of the aquifer. Finally considering the eleven properties of the qanats, they were classified using a cluster diagram. This classification shows that, to classify the qanats, hydrodynamic properties are the most influential factors.
