Abstract:

Petunia is one of the most important plants in the landscaping. Because of their different characteristics, they have different applications. This experiment was carried out to study the functional properties of two Petunia hybrida cultivars (‘Explorer’ and ‘Carnival’) and Petunia violacea  in Islamic Azad University, Kkhorasgan Branch (Isfahan) Iran, in 2011. Results showed that Petunia violacea had the maximum height, significantly different as compared to P. hybrida cultivars. The chlorophyll content was also higher than in P. hybrida. Cv. Explorer had wide canopy. This cultivar shows significant difference in the number of flowers in branch. Also root length, root dry weight and root fresh weight were highest. The largest flowers were seen in ‘Carnival’. It had low height, but the flower number was considerable. In this cultivar the lowest chlorophyll content was measured. ‘Explorer’ with coverage and abundant flowers is appropriate for ground cover. Petunia violacea, with long stems and many branches, was recommended in marginal and sloping area. ‘Carnival’ with low height, limited canopy and also short roots is suitable to create a heavy texture and colourfulness in the shallow gardens.
