Abstract:Phosphorus (P) release from sediments may have a significant effect on water quality and result in eutrophication. In this study, the effects of V. natans on phosphate sorption isotherms and their relationship with sediment composition were investigated, and P fractions in the water were discussed. The results showed that total phosphorus (TP), NaOH-extractable P (NaOH-P), organic matter (OM), inorganic P (IP) and organic P (OP) were the main factors influencing the ability of phosphate sorption. V. natans reduced the concentrations of TP, HCl-extractable P (HCl-P), IP, OP, total nitrogen (TN) and OM of the sediments and increased cationic exchange capacity (CEC) during the growth period, but increased the concentrations of TP, NaOH-P and IP in the decomposition period. V. natans decreased the phosphate sorption efficiency and the amount of P that could be released from sediments during its lifecycle. The risk of P release from sediments during V. natans’s decomposition period was larger than that in the growth period.
