Study on the possibility of limiting the number of technological groups of lactating cows kept in a loose housing system

Abstract:

The study consisted of two stages, which compared two loose housing systems for lactating cows (first calvers and multiparous cows). Each stage involved 42 cows, including 12 first calvers. In the first stage, all the cows were moved to other groups as their milk yield decreased, and in the second stage, the same principle was used to move multiparous cows, while first calvers were kept in one group until their milk yield decreased to 20 kg. Cows were fed a partly mixed ration (PMR) of roughages and concentrates. The effect of housing technology on milk yield, chemical composition and microbiological quality was investigated based on samples collected a day before moving and at 1, 3, 5 and 14 days after moving. First calvers and multipaous cows moved successively from Group I to Group IV as their milk yield decreased, showed the lowest daily milk yield at 3 days after moving. The highest, statistically significant decreases in daily yield were found in first calvers when moved from Group I to Group II (by 3.23 kg milk) and when moved from Group II to Group III (by 4.4 kg milk). The highest whole lactation milk yield (10,158 kg) was obtained by multiparous cows whose milk had an average somatic cell count (SCC) of 348,000 per ml. Cows with an SCC of <200,000 had the highest whole lactation yield averaging 440 kg fat and 3.98% fat in milk. The mean daily milk yield at 4, 5 and 6 days of lactation was similar in first calvers and multiparous cows and the difference in favour of the latter was 1.38 kg milk. The mean daily milk yield for a 305-day lactation was 4.38 kg higher for the group of primiparous cows compared to first calvers.
