Abstract:

One of the water sources in Saudi Arabia is ground water. Many metals can be found in well water due to natural phenomenon and yet there is a scarcity in studies of its metal contents. As heavy metals in ground water have an effect on public health, the awareness of their concentration in the water is sound important for the safety of human health. In this study, three wells in Al-Yanfa village, Asir region, Saudi Arabia, were selected for investigation. In August 2009, three water samples were collected from each of these wells for evaluation of its physico-chemical qualities using one litre polyethylene plastic bottles with screw caps. Values of pH, temperature, turbidity, total dissolved solids, alkalinity, Ca hardness, Mg hardness and total hardness were measured. The concentrations of Cl, SO4, NO3, NO2, NH3, Fe, F, PO4, Br, SiO2, Be, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, Zn, Ag, As, B, Ba, Cu, Mn and Mo were also determined. The results obtained indicated chemically and physically excellent quality of the investigated samples, complying with World Health Organization (WHO) norms and international standards of drinking water.
