Abstract:

Soil organic matter (SOM) is known to play important roles in the maintenance as well as improvement of many soil properties. Soil type, climate, management, mineral composition, topography, soil biota and the interactions between each of these are modifying factors that will affect the total amount of SOM or SOC in a soil. In this study, the influences of soybean pulp (SP) amendments on some physical and chemical properties of the Lithic Rhodoxeralf soil were investigated. This study was conducted between October 2000 and April 2001 in greenhouse as a pot experiment in the greenhouse. Treatments included four rates of SP as follows on a dry weight basis: 0, 2500, 5000 and 10,000 kg ha-1. After seven months incubation period, soil organic matter (SOM) contents, total nitrogen (N), soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), base saturation (BS) and bulk density (BD) were determined. The effect of SP amendments on total N, pH, EC and CEC was significant (p<0.001); as well as the effect of SP on SOM and BD (p<0.01). Soil amended with intermediate and high doses of SP showed an apparent increase in soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (N), base saturation (BS), and a slight increase in pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) while showing a small decrease in bulk density (BD). The use of SP can contribute to enhancing the level of organic matter in Lithic Rhodoxeralf, which is particularly poor in organic matter under greenhouse condition.
