Abstract:

Plants are important natural design components that embellish the environment surrounding children. For the botanical design to be applied on children’s playgrounds, aesthetic and functional features of the botanical material, as well as its toxicological and allergen features, in terms of children’s health, should also be taken into consideration. The needs and characteristics of the age group playing in the same playground should also be addressed. The focus of this study is the general planting principles for children’s playgrounds, and determining the plant types found in children’ playgrounds located in the Çankırı city center and their usage in terms of landscape architecture. Accordingly, eight out of the twenty-four playgrounds (33%) in Çankırı city were to be planted. It was discovered that the aesthetic, functional and toxicological features of the plants, as well as the users’ age group, were disregarded in selecting and placing the plant types. Recommendations have been made for the theory and practice in line with the results.
