Effects of salinity on three Pennisetum cultivars

Abstract:

Ornamental grasses are popular plants for low maintenance landscapes. Limited information exists on salt tolerance of ornamental grasses. Three Pennisetum genotypes (P. ‘Hameln’, P. setaceum, and P. setaceum ‘Rubrum’) were grown hydroponically for six weeks in 100 ppm Peter’s 20N-4P-16K nutrient solution added with NaCl salt at 0, 50, 100 or 150 mM. Plants height, chlorophyll a and b, and fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots were measured. At different stages of growth, the three cultivars responded similarly to salinity stress. Plant height, chlorophyll a and b, and fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots all decreased with increasing salinity levels.
