Abstract:

In South Africa, the Limpopo River Basin (LRB) is among the most vulnerable provinces. Communities around the basin face multiple challenges from drought and other extreme weather events. This study determined the factors influencing access to climate forecast from television, radio, neighbours and extension agents. We used the data that were collected by Center for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA) from 794 households from 20 randomly selected district. The data were subjected to descriptive and Probit regression analyses. The results show that average age of the farmers is 53.78 years, while average household size is about 6. Also, 46.47 percent had experienced drought in the past five years, while 9.70 percent experienced flood.  Probabilities of obtaining climate forecast information from all the sources increased with university education, ownership of televisions, cars, land, experience of flood and hailstorms, but reduced with farming experience, household size, large-scale farm operation and access to fertile land. It was recommended that efforts to address climate impact mitigation through meteorological forecasts should be gender sensitive with more targets of aged farmers.
