Abstract:

The bioremediation of contaminated soil was performed on a laboratory scale to study the ability of this method for remediation of TPH contaminated soil. The soil was contaminated by aged petroleum hydrocarbons with concentration of 67,500 mg/kg. The method used to remediation of this contaminated site was Slurry-Sequencing Batch Reactor (SS-SBR). An 8 L bioreactor was operated with a 10% solid concentration (0.1 kg dry soil/ L slurry). Fill period was relatively instantaneous, and draw period lasted approximately 5 min so the react period comprised essentially the entire cycle time. In draw period, a fraction of slurry (10%) was removed from the SS-SBR every two weeks and replaced with untreated slurry. This volumetric replacement strategy provided 90 days HRT. In the soil slurry reactor, about 95% of the 67,500 mg/kg TPH contaminated soil was degraded in 90 days HRT.
