Abstract:

The effects of varying forest floor at time of regeneration were evaluated in an Aleppo Pine study established in Chalkidiki, Greece, up to 25 years post fire. The objectives were to determine the effects of the forest floor on forest floor mass, nutrient dynamics, litterfall and mineral soil properties. The parameters measured included ash-free weight, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and calcium (Ca) concentrations in the forest floor, litterfall from the forest floor, total N, extractable P and exchangeable Mg, K and Ca from the mineral soil. Forest floor mass and nutrient content weren’t significantly different in the study areas. A significant difference was found in the mineral soil properties assessed. Greater amounts of available N in the mineral soil were found in burned areas.
