Abstract:

This study examined the effect on rape (Brassica napus L.) growth of soils treated with goethite which had boron either adsorbed or occluded. Four mildly acidic soils were selected for use in pot plant treatments. The addition of boron-adsorbed goethite to the soils resulted in increased rape plant growth, increased boron supplying, elevated soil pH and decreased exchangeable acidity in three of the soil types categorized as red, yellow-brown and brown-red. In the remaining lateritic red soil, boron-adsorbed goethite resulted in elevated soil pH but increased exchangeable acidity. Shoot and root weight correlated significantly (P<0.01) positively with soil pH and negatively with exchangeable Al3+. However, there were differences in rape growth amongst the soils amended with boron-adsorbed goethite, which appeared to be caused by variations in physical and chemical properties of the soil, especially organic matter content. Ad-B-goethite produced higher availability of boron than that of oc-B-goethite, and was favorable to plant uptake.
