Abstract:

Supercritical CO2 extraction (SFE-CO2) was used to get the neem SFE extracts from neem seed kernels, and the repellent, fumigant activity and contact toxicity of the neem SFE extracts were evaluated against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) adults. The neem SFE extracts demonstrated good repellent and fumigant activity but weak contact toxicity against T. castaneum, and the activity varied with concentrations of the extracts and exposure time. At the concentration of 1.0 mg/ml, the extracts showed the repellency of 100% after 12 h of the exposure. The fumigant mortality was 33.24% only at the concentration of 1.0 mg/ml, at the concentration increased to 50 mg/ml, mortality of adults reached 70.05%. For the contact toxicity, the percentage mortality was 33% at the highest treated concentration 50 mg/ml. The synergism of azadirachtin, oil and other active components in neem SFE extracts could increase the bioactivity against T. castaneum. Then the neem SFE extracts could be used a good repellent and safer fumigant to control T. castaneum.
