Abstract:

The main objective of this research was to determine the optimum decision on polymeric-based composite material for boat components. Three boat components involved in the material selection of polymeric-based composite are rib, stanchion and beam. Small boats from composites are normally used by fishermen for fishing. The objective is achieved by proposing material selection framework and implementing expert system approach using IF/THEN logic rules. Various attributes and criteria such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, impact strength, compressive strength, density, water absorption and component price of polymeric-based composite boat are considered. To determine the most suitable material for polymeric-based composite boat components, Exsys Corvid software is used. The research covers the development of user friendly interface for easy customization, material database using MetaBlock system, rule-based system and constraint satisfaction and violation. The research revealed that 20% glass fibre reinforced styrene acrylonitrile composite is the most suitable for rib and 45% glass fibre reinforced polyester composite for stanchion and beam. Overall, it can be concluded that the proposed material selection approach allows designer to determine the most suitable materials for polymeric-based composite boat components.
