Abstract:

A field study was carried out at Punjab Agricultural University, Regional Research Station, Bathinda, Punjab, India. The aim of this study was to study the effect of biofertilizers (Azotobacter sp. and Sphingobacterium sp. ) on morphological and quality parameters (biomass accumulation) of Melia azedarach under field conditions. The standard culture of Azotobacter sp. and Sphingobacterium sp. was obtained from Department of Microbiology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India. The results of experiment showed that three month old Melia azedarach plants transplanted under field conditions showed very good response to Azotobacter sp. and Sphingobacterium sp. treatment (T3) followed by Azotobacter sp. (T2).The data revealed that the 5.99 per cent increase in height (238.83 cm), 9.03 per cent in collar diameter (4.71 cm), 8.79 per cent in root length (35 cm), 8.99 per cent no. of main branches/plant (4.0), 19.59 per cent in fresh weight of shoot (1.16 kg), 13.21 per cent in dry weight of shoot (0.60), 17.72 per cent in fresh weight of root (0.93 kg) and 17.31 percent in dry weight of root (0.61 kg) was obtained by Azotobacter sp. and Sphingobacterium sp. inoculation over control. Thus dual inoculation of biofertilizer could play an important role in sustainable agriculture by improving soil fertility, plant tolerance to abiotic and biotic stress and productivity besides playing important role in N-fixation and P-solubilization.
