Geotechnologies and multivariate statistics applied to water resources management in a predominantly agricultural watershed

This study aimed to describe the application of geotechnologies in studies focused on water resources management in a predominantly agricultural watershed. The study was conducted in the watershed of the Lontras River in the southwest region of the state of Paraná. The image of satellite LANDSAT-8, dated 12.02.13, orbit/point 223/78, was used to perform the supervised classification using the SAM classifier. Water quality parameters - pH, DO, EC, turbidity, temperature, TDS and ORP - were monitored with a multiparameter probe in four different seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter) in 2012. Multivariate statistical techniques were used in order to facilitate the interpretation of the relationships of dependence between water quality variables and land and soil use categories. PCA allowed the identification of the most relevant variables to explain water quality variation. They were significantly influenced by the seasons of the year and monitoring points. RDA showed no significant correlation between water quality variables when correlated to soil and land use categories in the watershed of the Lontras River. However, it allowed the direct ordering of these variables in the four different seasons, thus facilitating the interpretation of the environmental gradients.
