Osmoprotectors in maize (Zea mays) under the effect of water availability and silicon levels in soil

The water stress is one of the main problems of agriculture and the ability of plants to resist and/or tolerate stress is of paramount importance for agribusiness development in any country. The aim of this study was to quantify the relative water content in leaves and the starch, sucrose, glycine-betaine, proline, and total soluble carbohydrates on the PZ 242 maize cultivar subjected to different levels of water availability and silicon concentrations in the soil. The experimental design was randomized under two water conditions, control and water stress, and five concentrations of silicon (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 mM) and seven replicates. Water stress in maize promoted negative physiological changes, causing a decrease in relative water content and concentrations of starch, while treatments with silicon in water stress conditions caused beneficial results of the mineral in the plant for osmoprotectors, glycine-betaine and proline, and the levels of sucrose and total soluble carbohydrates, especially at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mM.
