Molecular detection of Salmonella enterica serovars Typhimurium and Enteritidis in diarrheic calves

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the Multiplex-PCR for the rapid detection of Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Enteritidis in fecal samples collected from diarrheic and apparently healthy contact calves from farms located in Egypt. Fecal samples were collected from 150 diarrheic calves and 95 apparently healthy contact calves during summer 2012. All samples were examined for the presence of Salmonella species using bacteriological examination and Multiplex-PCR. Salmonella was isolated from 54 (36%) of diarrheic calves and from 29 (30.53%) of apparently healthy contact calves. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from 14.67% of diarrheic and 15.79% of contact calves; whereas Salmonella Enteritidis was isolated from 5.33% and 4.21%, respectively. Salmonella Dublin was isolated from 10% of the diarrheic and 8.42% of contact calves but Salmonella Anatum was isolated from 6% of the diarrheic and 2.11% of contact calves. The Multiplex-PCR could detect all the bacteriologically positive samples, in addition, it could detect 11 samples revealed negative results with bacteriological examination.
