Abstract:

Considerable interest has been focused on the Astragalus membranaceus, which has been used as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of colds and influenza, chronic diarrhoea, oedema, abnormal uterine bleeding and diabetes mellitus, and as a cardiotonic agent.  The effect of Astragalus membranaceus aqueous extract (AMAE) on myocardium oxidant injury in exhausting exercise mice was investigated. Products of lipid peroxidation and the activity of enzymes, namely superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, GOT, CK, Na+, K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase in myocardium tissue were assayed. Results showed that levels of blood TC, TG, LDL-c and MDA, and activities of GOT and CK were significantly higher in the exhausting exercise mice compared to normal control animals. Activities of SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, GR, Na+,K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+- ATPase were significantly lower in the myocardium tissue of exhausting exercise mice compared to normal control animals. The AMAE treatment dose-dependently significantly reversed these adverse biochemical indices to normal in AMAE-treated mice. It can be concluded that AMAE may decrease exhausting exercise-induced oxidative injury in experimental mice.
