Abstract:

Preservation of human dignity was one of five pivotal elements listed in the higher objectives and intents of Islamic law (maqasid al-syariah). In the past ten years, the creation of interspecies chimera, especially human-animal chimera in stem cell research was claimed to be the most controversial issue with respect to human dignity. The objective of this paper was to identify the concept of human dignity in al-Quran in relation to human-animal chimera and offered the Islamic principle to preserve human dignity. Islamic sources of al-Quran, al-Hadith and ijtihad are used as the platform of the measurement. There are three principles that must be obeyed in any research of human-animal chimera: (1) sources used in the research are not forbidden by syariah; (2) the product must be safe to the organ recipient and (3) do not develop any kind of human dignity capacity. However, if there is conflict between human dignity and life, thus protection of life is the primary concern. Nevertheless, there is no clinical trial conducted to human-animal chimera yet; thus, the expected consequences are still an open-ended question and there is a need to evaluate the dignity issue of human-animal chimera case by case.
