Abstract:

The objective of this study was to determine the optimum levels of mineral fertilizer in order to obtain high yields and nutritionally secure products of leaf vegetables. Studies were carried out during 2005-2007 on nitrogen compounds (nitrate and nitrite) accumulation in lettuce culture at different NPK mineral fertilizer doses, in an experimental plot, in west Romania, Timis county. Different levels of fertilizers (N = 0, 90 and 120 kg/ ha-1) were applied. The dependence of fertilizer doses applied in lettuce cultures and yield obtained was also investigated. In accordance with the Order No. 293/ 640/2001-1/2002 regarding security and quality conditions for vegetables and fresh fruits for human consumption, maximum limit allowed (LMA) for nitrate in lettuce is 2500 ppm. Nitrite levels in vegetables and fruit are not established by any law, but according to international studies are usually below 2 ppm, but according to Romanian authors, nitrite level in vegetables should be 1-5 ppm. The nitrogen compounds were determined by spectrophotometry. Climatic conditions, rain quantities and temperature regime had a special influence on yield and quality of lettuce samples. The results  for the lettuce crop during the experimentation years 2005-2007 indicated the favorable effect of fertilizers on yield, the highest production being 21, 346 kg/ha obtained in 2007 in variant v3.
