Abstract:

Microbes played an important role in mercury (Hg) methylation. In this work, total Hg and methylmercury (MeHg) in soil microbes (respectively, THgbio and MeHgbio) were determined. In the soil-plant system, the MeHgbio was around 0.9- 3.9 ng/g. In soil near plant roots, MeHgbio was about 48% of the total MeHg content; in soil far from roots, the proportion was 17.28%. Microbial biomass carbon contents were determined and used to calculate the total Hg and MeHg contents in microorganism bodies (THg(Cbio) and MeHg(Cbio), respectively). In soil near plant roots, MeHg(Cbio) and THg(Cbio) were 66.80 and 1316 µg/g, respectively; in soil away from roots the corresponding contents were 16.99 and 310.3 µg/g. MeHg and total Hg both accumulated greatly in microbe bodies, with MeHg more enriching. The present work suggested that microbes could be very important in Hg methylation and had extreme tolerance to Hg and MeHg.
