Managing invasive populations of red palm weevil: A worldwide perspective

Abstract:

Globalization facilitates the introduction and spread of insect species outside their native range. The invasive species can breed and spread aggressively because the new habitat might not have any natural enemy. Their establishment in new habitat can disrupt the existing pest management strategies. Moreover, the invasive species along with yield reduction can significantly increase the cost for its management. The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is an example that has become a major source of economic loss in date production especially in the Middle East. This review focuses on RPW invasive history, pest status, biology, host plants, economic impacts, control tactics and recent research and international efforts for RPW management.
