Abstract:

The need for conservation of water resources, coupled with growing demand for food, has aroused the interest of many researchers who have sought to contribute to agriculture by knowing the environmental characteristics and realities, and by involvement in the quest for sustainable development. This study aimed at characterizing soil use and occupation and water quality using GIS techniques to the municipality of Salto do Lontra, Parana State. The parameters analyzed were: pH, electrical conductivity, bicarbonate, chlorine, phosphate, nitrate, turbidity, temperature and fecal coliforms in two distinct annual rainfall periods. Satellite images were used for soil use and mapping as well as for application of the Thiessen polygon technique to determine the areas of influence on each point of measurement of water quality. Statistical analyses, based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Factorial Analysis (FA) techniques, were used to observe the relationship between soil use and occupation and water quality. The interpretation of images by the Argis 9.3 software allowed maps to be generated of soil use and occupation. Application of the Thiessen polygon technique allowed recognition of areas of influence on each point of measurement of irrigation water according to identification of soil utilization classes on representing polygons at points where there were restrictions on irrigation water use within phosphate and fecal coliform parameters. Application of the PCA technique for water quality data explained 53.27% of the variation among sampled characteristics and it identified two significant axes of variation in order to explain the relationship between soil use and occupation and water quality parameters.
