Abstract:

This study aimed to (i) determine efficient mathematical models, and (ii) estimate the leaf area in Piper nigrum plants, using the dimensional parameters of leaves with different sizes. This study was conducted with Piper nigrum L. (cv. Singapore), being 1200 trees with age of four years. Linear, linear without intercept, quadratic, cubic, logarithmic, exponential and potential models were adjusted between leaf area and length, the width and its products (length x width), and eliminated those that had a coefficient of determination less than 0.90. The statistic used to evaluate the performance of the models was the Pearson correlation coefficient (r), the determination (R²), the root mean square error, mean absolute error, the index d of Willmott and CS index. Measurements of leaf area in Piper nigrum plants can be estimated by linear equations, linear without intercept, quadratic and potential with good accuracy. Therefore, leaf area can be estimated by the following equations: AF = 0.6105(CxL) + 1.8159, AF = 0.6281(CxL), AF = 0.0004(CxL)² + 0.5339(CxL) + 5.2799 e AF = 0.78(CxL)0.9525.
