Research on the labeling management status of agricultural products in China

Abstract:

The agricultural products, especially edible agricultural products, as the main raw materials for food processing, have drawn more and more attention on their safety issues in China. Labeling enables stakeholders within the food supply chains to signal the quality and safety characteristics and helps consumers to make the right choices. This research aims to explore the labeling management status of agricultural products in China by means of integrated multiple research methodologies. The results show that China has launched a set of laws and regulations that target the labeling management of agricultural products. The survey results indicated that the main barriers for implementing the labeling system on agricultural products included the consumers’ lack of awareness, improper usage of labels by the producers, as well as the inefficient management and absence of a related support policy from the government. Some suggestions for solving the issues have been provided.
