A non-parametric efficiency analysis of Boro and Aman rice production in selected areas of the Mymensingh district in Bangladesh

Abstract:

This study explores data envelopment analysis efficiency scores based on field-level data of 178 rice farmers selected in 2010 from some of the major rice growing villages in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The technical, allocative, economic, and scale efficiency of individual observed farms was quantified. The results showed that the average total technical, pure technical, allocative, economic, and scale efficiency for Boro (dry season crop) rice farming were 85, 94, 85, 80 and 90%, respectively. The same efficiencies were 79, 90, 78, 70 and 87%, respectively, for Aman (wet season crop) rice. This indicates that there were considerable inefficiencies in producing both Boro and Aman rice, although farmers were more inefficient in Aman rice production. Farm input used ratios showed that most of the farmers overused inputs and employed an incorrect input mix in both seasons. Overuse of inputs was relatively higher for Boro rice than Aman rice. Tobit regression results showed that inefficiency was influenced by each farmer’s level of education, family size, land tenancy, seed type, household head occupation, extension services, farmer type (water buyer or seller), irrigation machine type (shallow tube well or deep tube well) and sources of energy for Boro rice. Moreover, farmers level of education, family size, land tenancy, plot size, seed type, extension services, mass media, and land degradation influenced inefficiency for Aman rice production. Inefficiency results suggested that in order to secure irrigation for Boro rice cultivation, the government should convert diesel pumps into electric pumps and also ensure a regular supply of electricity to rural areas. The government should also emphasize research to develop new varieties of rice seed and increase plot areas for Aman rice, which can enhance crop yields and farm revenues through the improvement of farmer efficiency. Finally, extension services need to be strengthened to increase the efficiency of rice production in Bangladesh.
