Genetic variability and heritability association with spike yield and related characters in durum wheat (Triticum durum (L.) Desf.)

Abstract:In this study, which was performed with 14 genotypes of durum wheat between the years of 2002 and 2005 to determine genetic parameters and correlations in spike characters, highly significant (p≤0.01) differences were observed for all traits studied indicating considerable amount of variation among genotypes for each character. The estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) and phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) were high for spike length, number of grains per spike and spike yield. PCV and GCV estimates for the remaining traits were between moderate and low. Heritability estimates in broad sense were high for spike length, number of spikelets per spike and spike yield while it was moderate for thousand kernel weight. High heritability and appreciable genetic advance for number of grains per spike indicated the predominance of an additive gene effect in controlling this trait. Moderate heritability (76%) and relatively high genetic advance (6.03 unit) outcomes were observed in thousand kernel weight. These estimates pointed out the possibility of effective selection for this trait. For spike yield, high heritability was associated with low genetic advance, indicating the influence of dominant and epistatic genes for this character. Spike yield was positively and significantly correlated with all spike characters except for spike length. These findings suggest the importance of number of spikelets per spike, number of grains per spike and thousand kernel weight for ultimate spike yield improvement of durum wheat.
