Leaching of different liming materials from acid soil and determination of liming period

Abstract:It is important for plant production to establish nutrient equilibrium in soils and improve soil properties. The objective of this study was to determine the amount of lime leaching from the soil and uptake by plants. In this research four different lime materials (CaCO3, CaO, MgCO3 and MgO) were applied to acid soils with different rates (0, 50 and 100% of lime requirement). Results indicated that increase in the amount of lime material applied to soil increased the amount of Ca and Mg leaching from the soil and uptake by plants. In other words, the more lime material applied, the more amount of loss of removal was in higher amount for Ca than Mg. Therefore, it was suggested that the time for liming is longer if Mg is used (8-10 years) and shorter if Ca is used (4-5 years). Amounts of Ca and Mg removed from soils were significantly affected by lime doses and materials.
