Differences in regional eco-security between China and the DPR Korea based on a study of land use/cover change in the past 30 years

Abstract:

The Changbai Mountains lie in a sensitive geo-political location between China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). They are also ecologically highly sensitive and show vertical zones of vegetation and landscapes that are very typical for East Asia. In the past 30 years, a series of natural hazards and socio-economic changes have had strong influences on the land use/land cover change (LUCC) in the area and have led to obvious differences. In this paper, LUCC and the level of ecological security were compared in two typical regions of the Changbai Mountains along the border between China and DPRK. The relative rate and the relative degree of land use change were used as indicators to analyze and compare the LUCC in China and DPRK, and the ecological risk index was calculated to evaluate the eco-security for the two study areas. The results show that the relative rate and degree of land use change on the DPRK side of the border is greater than that on the Chinese side. Many of the original vegetation types have been destroyed and replaced by artificial types. Generally the status of ecological security is safe in the two study areas in every period. But the ecological risk index showed a gradually increasing trend in the study periods, indicating that the eco-security is potentially at risk in the two study areas. The level of ecological security in the first study area is better than that in the second study area. A comparative analysis of the ecosecurity of the two countries revealed that the eco-security on the Chinese side was better than that on the DPRK side in all periods.
