Abstract:

Rural waterfronts and green areas are key components in the overall relationship between nature and the built environment, through the complexity of the functions they perform and the structural role in defining landscape tissues. The research study is located in Gropeni Commune, Brăila County, Romania, whose main habitat types are characteristic to the steppe bio-geographic region, while most of the administrative territory is occupied by agricultural land. Its common characteristic vegetation is expressed by its meadows and terraced landscape, the result of the Danube. During time, native vegetation was almost completely replaced with crop vegetation. We distinguish between several types of landscapes that make up a structure consisting of integrative levels of organization reflecting the quantitative participation of natural and human elements. Watercourses and waterfronts are among its major natural elements, as are the natural corridors they define along the Danube, but also along a wide array of agriculture-related irrigation canals. The paper shows the present status, successes and failures, proposals and recommendations for conservation action, strengthening and expansion of the waterfronts and green areas in the administrative territory of Gropeni Commune.
