Abstract:

The impacts of cadmium (Cd) treatment on soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), basal respiration, and enzyme activities were investigated under laboratory conditions. Results showed that the effects of Cd on soil basal respiration and enzyme activity are closely related to the concentration and incubation time of Cd treatments. Low concentrations of Cd had a stimulating effect on soil basal respiration and urease activity at the early state of incubation (7 d) and an inhibitory influence at higher concentration in the whole incubation period (45 d). Low concentrations of Cd had no impact on the soil phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities whereas high concentrations of Cd can inhibit the activities of these two enzymes, with the inhibitory effects become weak and even disappeared with the extension of incubation time. The Cd concentration and incubation time had no influences on Cmic. Basal respiration and dehydrogenase activity were more markedly inhibited by Cd contamination than those of biomass C, urease and phosphatase. Soil basal respiration and dehydrogenase activity may hold great potential as sensitive biological indicators of Cd stress in soil quality.
