Abstract:Urban system is an open, important and far-from equilibrium system. Based on the emergy theory, this study aims to present two methods of emergy indices system and integrated mathematical models to analyze and evaluate the development of an urban system. This paper divides the urban system into three subsystems of resources, economy, environment, and selects four emergy-based evaluation indices for each subsystem. Four mathematical models are established for the urban sustainable development evaluation, including the development level model, development speed model, harmonious degree model and sustainable development indicator model. The case study of Wu’an city in China shows that: the economic development of Wu’an mainly depends on the consumption of the local non-renewable resources, and imposes a great pressure on the environment; the development levels of resources subsystem and environmental subsystem were in a downward trend, economic development level increased rapidly; the development speed and the harmonious degree of three subsystems was relatively low; and the sustainable development indicator of Wu’an has a great improved potential. The recommendations for the development of Wu’an are rationally developing and utilizing mineral resources, adjusting the industrial structure, and strengthening environmental protection.
