Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate the enzyme activities under different vegetation types in the saline-sodic area of the Songnen Plain, Northeast China, and to test the potential of using enzyme activity as an indicator of soil salinisation. Salinity-sodicity and enzyme activities were measured in various saline-sodic soils under different vegetation types. We discovered that the salinity-sodicity of bare land was the higher than vegetated areas while the enzyme activity in barren soils was the lowest. Moreover, the soil enzyme activities of catalase, invertase and urease under P. australis were higher than those under other vegetation types. We found a significant negative correlation between surface soil catalase activity and the soil salinity-sodicity index suggesting that the soil catalase activity could potentially be an indicator of the degree of salinity and sodicity.
