Abstract:

The present study analyzed the spatiotemporal variation of land use/cover and landscape pattern in the three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) based on time-series remote sensing imageries. Land use/cover changes were derived from a time-series of satellite images of Landsat TM in 1988, Landsat ETM in 2000 and Landsat TM in 2007. The results showed that the main land use/cover types in TGRA are woodland and farmland across study period, which accounted for more than 90% of the total study area. During the recent two decades, the farmland areas decreased by 30.58%. The areas of woodland, grassland, settlement and water increased continuously. Among them, the area of woodland increased mostly by 26.91%. The frequent conversion among land use types was due to the intervention of human activities. The main patterns of land use change were the conversions of woodland to farmland and grassland, farmland to woodland and grassland, and grassland to woodland. The Shannon’s diversity index (SHDI) increased from 0.92 to 1.09, and the Shannon’s evenness index (SHEI) increased from 0.52 to 0.61, which indicated that the heterogeneity degree of landscape increased and landscape type had a developing tendency towards complex direction. Anthropogenic activities are the main cause of land use/cover and landscape changes in TGRA.
